The ladies were often ignored and had to overcome obstacles of prejudice that did not apply to men. Some of these intrepid, brave and very determined ladies became household names for their daring exploits, others, equally brave and determined, were less well known.

Born Sophie Catherine Theresa Mary Peirce-Evans in Knockaderry, County Limerick, Ireland in 1897 was one of the latter. Life for Sophie started badly when, before her second birthday, her mother was murdered by her father. Her father was found guilty but insane. Sophie went to live at her grandfather’s house in Newcastle West. She was brought up by two spinster aunts. Sophie had a passion for sports but had to battle against the discouragement of her aunts. Her determination to succeed stood her in good stead at this time and later in her life.

Sophie spent her school days in Dublin and, later joined The Royal College of Science in Ireland. She completed her studies with a first class degree in science. She continued with her sports, mainly hockey, and also wrote articles for the student magazine.

During the first world war she spent two years as a dispatch rider and, while in France, Sir John Lavery painted her portrait. By this time she had married and become Mrs Elliot-Lynn only to be widowed a few years later. She became Lady Heath after her second marriage which was to Sir James Heath in 1928.

Sophie moved to England in 1922 and became one of the founders of the Women’s Amateur Athletic Association. She became the first women’s Javelin champion and also set a disputed world high jump record. In 1925 she wrote the book ‘Athletics for Women and Girls’. In the same year she became a delegate to the International Olympic Council and took her first flying lesson to become a pilot.

Sophie qualified for her ‘A’ licence but was prevented from obtaining a Commercial Pilot’s Licence by the International Commission for Air Navigation which had banned women from becoming Commercial Pilots. Sophie had already shown her fighting spirit by being the first woman to make a parachute jump. She fought the ban winning a concession that if she attended a flight school and passed the test she could have the Commercial Licence. This she did and became the first woman to have a Commercial Licence in Great Britain. The ban was rescinded.

After setting altitude records for a small plane and in a Shorts seaplane Lady Heath, as she was now known, planned the flight which made her famous. Cape Town to London. The flight was scheduled to take three weeks but took over three months lasting from January 1928 to May. She became the first pilot to fly an open cockpit plane on that route. Her fame spread and she did many tours in UK and USA meeting the President and his wife. In America she was known as ‘Queen of the Skies’ and ‘Britains Lady Lindy’.

One of the most important tasks that the helicopters undertake is fire fighting- not fire fighting in residential area, but in huge areas like in the case of forest fires and terrorist attacks. The destruction is on a large scale and efficient and quick management of crisis is required. A lot depends on the competency of the pilot as well, because gadgets are of no use in ignorant hands.

Techniques: One of the simplest and the most effective methods that the chopper uses is the water bucket. It is actually a portable bucket-like structure, hung externally below the helicopter using cargo hooks. The mechanism is not very complicated, and once emptied, it can be refilled very quickly from nearby lakes and ponds, making it very efficient and quick in times of crisis.

Another such tool is the Bambi Bucket, which is a slightly advanced version of the water bucket and can be carried in distant regions as well, making fire fighting possible even in those remote regions where there are hardly any facilities for such severe possibilities.

Fire Extinguishers: Apart from water, the helicopter also uses chemicals and water enhancers like foams, gels and specially formulated fire retardants. The helicopter is also used for Foam System Operations. The manufacturers produce foam of different chemical densities to suit the requirements of different aircraft.

The foam is added to the water buckets in concentration levels of 0.5% to 1.0%, though they may differ according to circumstances. Foam tanks are almost similar in use to water tanks but they require power pumps to operate.

Advantages: The helicopter is also an excellent way to survey the entire area and keep a contact with the ground personnel regarding the current situation. The standard method of controlling fire is to start at the “heel” or the starting point of the fire and to continue along the “flanks” or the side, towards the area where it is headed. This gives the added advantage of checking whether the fire has changed course and affected other area or not. Moreover, a fire spreads more rapidly if it is moving uphill, because of the wind and other driving factors, and such situations are most efficiently controlled from the air.

These techniques that can be performed with helicopters make them a boon during rescue operations.

A stall is one of the scariest flight experiences that a pilot can encounter. When an airplane goes into a complete stall, it basically becomes like a boat with out a sail or rudder, but with one great exception: it doesn’t just float around in the air; it starts plummeting towards the ground, which spells doom unless the pilot can restore function to the plane’s wings and tail. In aviation, a stall is formally defined as occurring when a plane’s angle of attack increases to the point that the plane’s lift begins to decrease.

Obviously, the best way to avoid a stall of an aircraft is to be familiar with your aircraft’s critical angle of attack and be vigilant to not exceed it. Stalls invariably occur as a result of simple pilot error, but most stalls are precipitated by something that disrupts the airplane’s flight path or the pilot’s horizon orientation, such as wake turbulence, system failure, inclement weather or other conditions that create low visibility. Consequently, there is far more literature that instructs pilots on how to recover from stalls than there is literature that instructs pilots on how to avoid them.

Most modern aircraft contain technology that lets a pilot know when the critical angle of attack is near to being exceeded. Some planes alert the pilot of an impending stall with an audible warning, while other aircraft are designed to begin stalling at the wing root instead of the wing tip, which causes the yoke to vibrate. When the yoke begins vibrating, the aircraft’s wing tips are still fully operational, which allows the pilot to easily reduce angle of attack and avoid a full stall.

Instrument recovery training is usually recommended in addition to general upset recovery training and aerobatic flight training. As opposed to instrument recovery training, aerobatic training helps equip pilots with a “natural feel” for what to do upset attitude situations. Combining all three forms of training offers the best preparation for dealing with stalls. To enroll into these programs is as simple as visiting a flight program in the aviation adventure industry online.

Getting a pilot’s license with the intent on learning to fly a helicopter is a very ambitious goal. But of all of the aircraft, the helicopter is probably one of the most versatile and useful kinds of flying in society.

You don’t have to look far to find ways that helicopter pilots are getting great jobs in all segments of society. Every local news team has at least one if not several traffic or weather helicopters to help report the news. Every day these pilots whisk a news team off to the heart of a fast breaking story, often a story that is filmed directly from the cockpit of their helicopter.

The need for helicopters to assist law enforcement is easy to witness by just watching any cop or detective show on television or in the movies. But the way the pilot of the helicopter becomes a big part of many police situations is not overstated. For law enforcement, the need to get right to the heart of a crime situation is nothing short of critical. Time makes a big difference when it comes to solving a crime or stopping a dangerous situation from spiraling out of control.

Helicopter pilots can find great employment giving rides around the city during the holidays, flying busy executives to high stakes business meetings from the top of skyscrapers, whisking rock stars away from overly adoring fans or working for hospitals getting remote patients to medical care quickly and saving lives in the process. This means that the chances are your life as a helicopter pilot will be exciting, fast paced and always doing something urgent taking you to the most interesting of places.

But of the many ways that helicopter pilots find great jobs helping others in society, rescue missions may be the most meaningful. During the hurricane Katrina disaster, it was a common thing to see helicopter pilots going in and plucking people off of rooftops to take them to safety and to be reunited with their grateful families. In forest fire situations, helicopters are what are used to dump water or chemicals on the fire to try and stop the burning.

You should know the demands that will be put on you when you start on your course to learn to fly a helicopter and get a pilot’s license that says you can be counted on to handle this important vehicle with skill. Unlike a conventional airplane, the helicopter and maneuver straight up and side to side with phenomenal flexibility. It can hover over a location virtually in one place and be landed with nothing more needed than a small plot of ground to place it down on rather than a long landing field. The skill to be able to actually do these maneuvers with this precision flying machine take time and money to gain.

Flying a model plane is not limited to flight enthusiasts, the process of building a model aircraft capable of flight is very rewarding and the actual flight itself is an extremely satisfying experience. While flying a model plane is a great deal of fun, it does require a degree of patience and seriousness. Electronically powered planes can be flown without experience, but much experience is required for the larger models.

A glider is generally the best way to begin your experience in flying a model plane. They are built solidly, inexpensive and easy to fly. However, if it powered flight you are after, then an electronic model is your best bet. Electronic flight is clean and also inexpensive as most electronic planes run off rechargeable batteries. There are however some issues with electronic fight that you would not find with a glider; you will need battery packs and often the duration of flight achievable from a single charge is not satisfying enough. For those serious about flying a model plane, you should look towards a powered model that uses fuel to propel the model through the air. The model does not need to be as light as an electronic model or glider and the fuel will let you fly for longer. You may however have to practice flight with a powered model in a field or somewhere away from populated areas if you want to legally practice flying a model plane of this nature.

Whatever you do, steer clear from fast scale flying models, while they fly fast and look impressive, these are the last qualities you want from a model plane if you are new to the recreation. The faster they fly, the less control you will have over them and the more expensive the guaranteed repairs will be. Remember to find an instructor or join a club, as often times reading the instruction manual may not suffice in terms of a lesion. Ask around, look for support and at least ask the guy at your local model flight shop for a recommendation of a first model. Flying a model plane is such a rewarding experience, especially if you plan on building your own, just ask around for the best deals and invest in a lesson or two to help you learn the basics.

This is something that the training school should have made very clear as far as how much theory time and practical time has to be spent in order for one to qualify for the exam. However, if you have neglected to pay attention or to read the rules and regulations that the school has outlined then the problem could be your lack of understanding.

One thing that you want to be very clear on is that there is going to be certain segments to your training. Part of that will be your pre-solo and during that particular time you will have one of the school instructors with you. Once you have gotten past a certain point you are able to move on where you will start looking at your solo flying, which means being without an instructor.

Eventually, the ultimate goal at the end is to be able to get to the point where you’re ready to do your final test. You will have a logbook that is called your flight book, which is what you are going to be responsible for to keep track of all the hours affiliated with your course of both practical and your written or classroom work.

Every school has to follow the same outline for instruction and the basics of that will be your flying in an airplane that only has a single engine. There will be some cross country air time that has to consist of three hours. Part of this must be a night training with a 100 mile distance trip. This is your flight that you will be taking across the country and in addition to this you will have to have partaken in 10 departures and landings as well. This isn’t something that will be done at random, and you will have to follow the pattern that the traffic of the particular airport has scheduled.

Within two months, you have to make sure that you do three hours of free flying to qualify for your tests, which are 10 hours of being alone and five hours going across country on your own. You will have to be sure that the hundred and fifty cross country miles are spent in flight, and you will have to have made three stops during this time.

The history of modern hot air ballooning began in France in 1783. Two brothers, Joseph Michel and Jacques Etienne Montgolfiere, launched the first hot air balloon in September of 1783 with an odd trio of passengers – a sheep, a duck, and a rooster. The king and his court turned out to see the spectacle, and they were not disappointed. The balloon rose to more than 1000 feet and then floated down, safely returning its three passengers to the ground.

In 1782 they became interested in understanding why smoke rose and whether it could be used to lift man into the sky. They began experimenting, moving from smaller balloons to larger ones. By the time they lifted the barnyard animals into the sky, they had already successfully launched an unmanned full-size balloon.

After the barnyard trio’s successful flight, the brothers moved on to manned flight. In November 1783, they launched the first manned hot air balloon flight. Pilate de Rozier and the Marquis d’Arlandes were the pilots of the silk-and-paper balloon, and the two stayed aloft for about 25 minutes, ascending approximately 500 feet and traveling about 5 1/2 miles from their origination point in a Paris park.

Legend says the pilots gave champagne after landing to the local farmers to alleviate their fears of the suspicious craft descending from the sky, but he National Balloon Museum in Iowa disputes this story, saying research shows the balloon actually landed in an empty vineyard with no witnesses.

The first manned flight in a hot air balloon was quickly followed by the first gas balloon ride. Just 10 days after the Montgolfier’s balloon carried its two human passengers into the sky, French physicist Jacques Alexander Charles launched the first manned gas balloon flight on December 1. It also started in Paris, but lasted much longer; the balloon stayed aloft 2 1/2 hours and traveled 25 miles.

Ballooning quickly took off from there. French balloonist Jean Pierre Blanchard and American John Jeffries became the first people to cross the English Channel in a hydrogen balloon. The crossing took two and a half hours, and nearly ended in disaster – the pilots had to toss most of their ballast overboard after the balloon unexpectedly lost gas and almost fell into the channel. Months later, Pilate de Rozier, one of the two pilots in the first manned Montgolfiere, became the first person to die in a balloon accident as he attempted to cross the Channel.

Blanchard later flew the first hot air balloon in North America, in 1793. But it wasn’t until 1830 that Charles Ferson Durant became the first American to pilot a hot air balloon in North America. He lifted off from New York’s Castle Garden to drop leaflets that contained a poem he had written about the joys of flight.

The sport never really took off, however, until 1960, when advances in balloon technology led to a new interest in hot air ballooning. Paul Yost, who became known as the father of modern hot air ballooning, piloted the first flight of a balloon sporting a new envelope and new propane burner system he developed. Suddenly the sport took off. By 1963, sport ballooning had become popular enough that the first U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championships were held in Michigan.

It is imperative that you understand your career choices before entering any program of study. For example, a decision must be made whether math majors want to instruct, work for NASA, or become bookkeepers. It is more difficult to become an aircraft mechanic than an auto mechanic, so pay attention to the following information on the business of aircraft mechanics.

A mechanic who is FAA certified can select either a power plant rating or an airframe rating. An airframe rating is determined by all parts of the body and structure of the plane. A power plant rating is part of the engine specification of aircraft. You must complete 18 months of hands-on plane maintenance to even be able to apply to take the tests if you want one of these certifications. You must either have the signature of the supervising mechanic or a notarized statement from your employer to confirm the time worked. Maintenance work can only be performed after you complete a certified program of study or aircraft maintenance school.

If you want both certificates, you can opt to take a different test after working for thirty months. You will be elevated the the level of A&P mechanic, qualified to work on the entire airplane with the exception of the instrument panel (aka avionics). It is quite common among mechanics to obtain both certificates, and most of them hold A&P certificates.

Avionics repair is a highly specialized field which is worth all of the hard work. Avionics concentrates on the electronic systems and instruments of the airplane and, ironically, many aircraft mechanics have not trained in this area. The focus of avionics technicians is on a plane’s electronics and instrumentation, areas in which most aircraft mechanics are not trained. More licenses are needed for these duties.

The aviation industry, including general aviation, is heading more towards avionics, and industry experts forecast that this will be reflected in the job market for years to come. If a perspective employer sees on your résumé that you are trained in both aviation mechanics and avionics, you can rest assured your name will be at the top of the list of people he will hire because he will be getting two technicians for the price of one. Avionics oftentimes consists of a knowledge of the the most current technology and having the ability to apply this technology as a mechanic.

There is a specific field for each aircraft mechanic to work in. You can choose from several different types of workplaces such as aircraft manufacturing facilities, airfields, and the military. While the majority of aircraft mechanics are generalists, repairing all of the systems on a variety of aircraft, others are specialists, working only on specifics parts.

Before deciding on a career as an aviation mechanic, please understand that maintenance will be a daily requirement that will consume most of your time. FAA certification standards require continuous training, particularly if you have an A&P certificate. So be sure you log in at least 1,000 hours of mechanical work every two years or you will have to take refresher courses.

While you are deciding to become an aircraft mechanic you should know all of the possible opportunities. Your educational and certification requirements will depend on which field of study you wish to pursue and what types of aircraft you want to work on.

Most of the airport transportation services used are professionally run and operated to ensure client comfort and security. The costs of airport transportation vary depending on the type of airport shuttle used. Airport limos are the most expensive due to the prestige and quality services that come with them.
